We are here again everyone for another exciting edition of 10 questions with.... this time its David Oakes Drummer for the band Kotow
1. How Long Have You Been Playing Drums ?
Since about age 15. I started like a lot of kids do - with tubes and boxes in the shed ! I'm now on my third Kit. A Mapex Meridian Birch sic piece.
2.At what age did you start listening to Metal ?
Probably around the time of " Troublegum " by Therapy? My first proper "heavy" CD.
3.Which Band or Bands introduced you to Heavy Metal ?
Therapy? Metallica. Ugly Kid Joe. Lots of early 90's bands. When I was about 12 years old.
4.What are some of your favourite Metal Bands ?
At the moment, I like Therapy? Metallica, Mastodon, Dream Theater, Trivium etc :)
5.In your Opinion, which Metal Band is the true Grandfather of Heavy Metal ?
I would say Sabbath. Probably the first heavy band to introduce down-tuning. Plus they actively set out to make scary music.
6. Are there any other Genres or sub-genres set apart from your current style of music that you listen to personally.( if i was to look in your IPOD library what would we find)
Primus. Oasis, Noel Gallagher. Green Day. REM. Erasure. Biosphere. Paul Weller. Dire Straits. Mainly guitar bands but not all heavy metal !!!
7. Was your choice of instrument, influenced in anyway by possible band postioning? (IE choose drums because you didn’t want to be up front)
I actually cannot remember *why* I started drums but I think It may have been something to do with guitar being too hard !! I was chosen as Kotow's drummer since I was family and I had a drum kit, and I could play really well !! :P
8. How would you best describe your music and who are your influences
Kotow set out to sound original with weird time signature and riffs that would confuse people but be catchy and bouncy enough to make them jump around !
Our influences starting out where whatever we happened to be listening to when writing. Fugazi, Tool, System Of A Down, Metallica. Current influences include Mastodon and Dream Theater.
9. What do you like or dislike about playing a live show?
I love the feel of playing our music to an audience and seeing their reaction. For some reason, i've never suffered with stage fright and can put all the pre-show jitters into my playing and sometimes I play better than in rehearsal !!
I dislike when nobody turns up or appreciates our playing ! Plus packing the kit away is a pain ! xD
Thank you to Dave for his time....
